The modern history of graffiti art began in the late 1960s in the United States. This was during a period of social unrest and political upheaval, and graffiti was seen as an expression of protest and rebellion. One of the first modern graffiti writers went by the name of “Cornbread”.
Cornbread played a huge role in the evolution of graffiti as an art form and has been remembered by the first man to tag a live elephant at the Philadelphia Zoo. Graffiti art quickly spread throughout the United States and Europe. Some of the most famous street artists of the time included Jean-Michel Basquiat, Keith Haring, and Lee Quinones.
These artists used graffiti as a way to express themselves and make social and political statements. In the 1980s and 1990s, graffiti art developed into a more sophisticated art form. Artists began to experiment with different techniques and styles, creating complex and visually stunning pieces of art
